the frontier
distant drumbeats
I think that we all need frontiers. Physical ones that are imposed on us help to concentrate our energy and can give us an illusion of safety. What lies beyond can be full of fear or liberation. We all have to take a step across sometimes in our lives, like the first step into the sea, the first bus journey alone, the first mouthful of truly foreign food or the first kiss.
Our frontier goes just ahead of us, staying close to our toes until we gain enough confidence to look up and around. Then the frontier is no longer a line to cross but a vast world, endless sky, a universe to explore as far as we dare... and we are at once aware of faint sounds, the wind in the grass, distant voices and the electrifying sound of drumbeats far away.
